Neptune Swimmers' Special Achievements
South Island Champs
Congratulations to all Neptune swimmers on a great South Island Champs. Neptune was represented by 18 swimmers, Neptune swimmers won 21 Gold medals, 27 Silver and 10 Bronze. Well done to all medal winners.

Otago Records: Nick Tyrrell swam an outstanding 200 Backstroke in a time of 2.01.59, a 4 second PB and breaking Kurt Crossland's Open Otago Record of 2.01.74. Great effort and Well done Nick.
2011 Queen's Birthday Highlights
Neptune swimmers represented the club well at our 28th Annual Queen's Birthday Meet, earning enough points to emerge as the top club with a total of 2872 points.
Aleisha Ruske had another outstanding meet earning 3 Gold, 6 Silver and 1 Bronze medal and was 2nd in total points in her age group. She also set a total of 10 new Otago Short Course records in the female 12-13 age group:

Katie Kenneally won the 15 and over women's age group and was the 3rd overall points winner at the meet. She won 10 Gold and 2 Silver medals.
Nick Tyrrell won the 15 and over men's age group with 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.
Mathew Glassford was 2nd in the 15 and over men's age group with 5 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medals.
Ronald Poon was 3rd in the 13-14 age group with 3 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.
Special congratulations to our youngest medalists! Harriet Cottle (8) earned 2 silver medals in the 8 and under 25 metre free and back races and Charlotte Hewson (7) earned Bronze in the 25 Free.

2011 New Zealand Open Championships
The Neptune team of Lil Clearwater, Emily Poon, Kate Godfrey, Katie Kenneally, Matthew Glassford, NickTyrrell and Adam Simpson had an outstanding meet to finish as the 8th overall club in the NZ Open Championships.
Highlights:
- Katie Keneally won a Silver in the 200 breaststroke and Bronze in the 50 breaststroke. She also finished 4th in the 400IM and 6th in the 100 breaststroke.
- Kate Godfrey broke two Otago Records, the 200m Open Backstroke in a new time of 2.19.20 and the 100m Open Backstroke in a time of 1:05.56. She was named to the 2011 Youth Commonwealth Games New Zealand Team to go to the Isle of Man, 7-13 September.
- Matthew Glassford was named to the Outward Bound Team.
2011 National Age Group Championships
Neptune placed 12th at the NZ Age Groups held in Wellington. Neptune had 12 swimmers attend this meet, 11 of the 12 coached by Gennadiy Labara and Aleisha Ruske coached by Punch Tremaine.

Neptune swimmers made 43 finals with 8 medals being won.
Aleisha Ruske had an outstanding first NAGS winning 4 individual medals. Aleisha won one gold in
the 100m Butterfly,2 silver in the 100m free & 200m Fly and bronze in the 50 Fly.
Aleisha broke 5 Otago 12-13 Age Group records.
- 50 Free - 1996 record held by Lara McCambridge in a new time of 27.91
- 100 Free - 1991 record held by Anna Wilson in a new time of 1.01.04
- 50 Fly -1995 record held by Hannah Shanks in a new time of 29.85, the old record being 31.03
- 100 Fly – 1993 record held by Liz Van Welie in a new time of 1.06.63, the old record 1.08.86
- 200 Fly – 2009 record held by Stef Gillespie in a new time 0f 2.31.54, the old record 2.34.34
18 year old Adam Simpson started strong by winning silver in the 200 IM in a time of 2.10.56. Adam
also won bronze in the 400 Free, 4.06.27 and 400 IM, 4.37.40. This was a very successful meet for
Adam achieving 6 out of 8 PB’s in the finals.
Kate Godfrey, 16, won a silver medal in the 200 Back, in a time of 2.20.33, breaking her own Otago
Open record.
Matt Henderson, Phillip Baxter and Han Zhang all attended their first National Age Groups with the
best finals placing being 4th, 6th and 5th respectively.
NZ Junior Nationals
Congratulations to Devon Familton, Max Gomez, Ben McMahon and Nicole Ruske on their great results at NZ Junior Nationals in Wellington. All the swimmers achieved personal best times during the meet and represented the club very well. Nicole Ruske had a top 10 national placing in her 50 backstroke.
Otago Champs
Aleisha Ruske had an outstanding Otago Champs winning 9 Gold Medals (100 Back, 50 Fly, 200 Free, 400 IM, 50 Free, 200 Fly, 100 Fly, 100 Free, 200 IM) and 2 Bronze Medals (100 Breast, 200 Breast).
She also set 3 new Otago Long Course records for the girls 12-13 age group:
- 50 Fly – 30.30
- 100 Fly – 1.07.66
- 50 Free – 28.18
Kate Godfrey was the other Neptune swimmer to break an Otago Record at the meet. She set the Female Open LC record in 100 Back in a time of 1.05.73. Kate had a very successful meet winning 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.

Hokonui Sprints
Matt Henderson competed at this meet on 7 February and set another Short Course Otago Record in the 50m Breast stroke. Matt broke Sam Carradus' 1997 record of 34.05 in a time of 34.03
Canterbury Champs
Congratulations to Philip Baxter for winning Gold in 200 and 100 breaststroke, and Silver in the 50 breaststroke and 200 fly.
Matt Henderson also had a great meet winning Gold in the 50 breaststroke in an Otago Long Course record time of 34.12 and Bronze in the 100 breaststroke.
Max Gomez made finals in the 50 and 200m free coming 5th and 8th respectively and qualified for NZ Junior Nationals with those swims.
Queensland Long Course Champs 2010
Neptune Swimmers: Lil Clearwater, Matthew Glassford, Kate Godfrey, Katie Kenneally, Nick Tyrrell, Phoebe Williams.
The Neptune womens relay team won 2 bronze medals on the first day of racing in the Womens 200 medley regional relay and womens 200 freestyle regional relay.
Matthew Glassford won Bronze in the Open 200 Breastroke in a time of 2.17.91
Kate Godfrey swimming in the 16 year age group also had a successful meet winning 5 bronze medals in the 400 IM, 200 Backstroke and 100 Backstroke in a time of 1.05.79 breaking Stacey O Regans 1996 Open Otago LC record.

International Swimming Success
Neptune Swimmer Carlos Biggeman recently travelled to Taiwan to compete in the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation World Championships. He represented Neptune and New Zealand well, recording personal best times in the 50 Metre Freestyle, 50 Metre Backstroke, 50 Metre Breaststroke and 100 IM. He earned a Gold Medal in the 50 Free, Silver in the 50 Butterfly and Bronze in the 50 Breaststroke.
Neptune is very proud of Carlos’ accomplishments and know he now has his sights set on more international competition. Well done!
NZ Short Course Age Group Champs 2010 – Neptune Results
Neptune has come away from NZ Short Course Age Groups in 9th position from 61 New Zealand clubs who attended these champs. These champs were moved from Christchurch following the earthquake and most clubs around the country made the effort to attend. This was a very successful meet for Neptune with 10 swimmers attending. The calibre of swimming was exceptional with a visiting Queensland Team providing great racing for New Zealand’s Age Group swimmers.
Neptune Swimmers: Lil Clearwater, Kate Godfrey, Ben Gray, Cameron McMahon, Emily Poon, Ronald Poon, Robert Murray, Adam Simpson, Rebecca Thom and Phoebe Williams.
15 medals were won by Neptune swimmers with Kate Godfrey,16, leading the way by winning 2 Gold and 2 Bronze medals in the 200 Back, 200IM, 100 Back, 400IM. Kate broke the Otago record in 200 Back.
Lil Clearwater, 16, had a fantastic swim on the final night in her 50m freestyle winning gold in a time of 26.64, breaking Lara McCambridges’ 10 year old record of 26.67.
This brings the number of Otago records broken by Gennadiy Labara’s OSCA swimmers to a total of 156 since his arrival in Dunedin in September 2006.
Phoebe Williams, 17, won 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in 800 Free, 200 Butterfly, 400 Free and 400IM. Adam Simpson, 18, won a silver medal in a PB of 15.52.02 in the 1500 Free. Both Phoebe and Adam have recently moved to Neptune and the OSCA squad.
Emily Poon , 15,won 3 Silver medals in 800 Fr,400 Fr and 200 Butterfly. Emily’s butterfly swim was a great swim as she went into the final ranked 5th.
Ben Gray,15, has also come away from this national meet with 2 medals, a silver medal in the 200 fr and bronze in the 200 Butterfly.
Gennadiy Labara was very pleased with his swimmers success for such a small squad who represented both Neptune and Otago consistently in more than 50 finals.
Finalists included Cameron McMahon, Robert Murray, Ronald Poon and Rebecca Thom, with some improving their rankings going into the meet.
This was a very successful trip with great team spirit and great swimming.
Neptune Top Club at South Island Swimming Championships
Neptune has come away from 2010 South Island Champs as the overall # 1 club, with 539 points.
Aqua gym from Canterbury were 55.5 points behind with 483.5 points with QE11, also a Canterbury
club coming third with 347. This was an improvement for Neptune on last year’s 2nd place. The team
came away with a medal haul of 44 Individual medals, 29 relay medals and a total of 73 medals in all.

Katie Kenneally won a total of 5 individual Gold medals, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze plus 2 Silver and 1 Bronze in the Otago relays. Katie’s 100IM swim was a South Island record in a time of 1.04.40, which is 0.28 seconds off Anna Wilson’s Otago record.
Matthew Glassford won 5 individual gold medals plus 1 silver and 1 bronze in the Otago relays. Matthew also broke the South Island 200 IM record in a time of 2.07.33.
Young Matt Henderson put in a fine effort, dominating all the breastroke races and bringing him 3 individual Gold medals, plus 1 Relay gold and 1 relay Bronze. Matt broke 3 South Island records and 1 Otago record. Breaking Sam Caradus’ 1996 record by 3.35 seconds in a time of 2.41.61.

2010 New Zealand Open Championships
Matthew Glassford was the only Otago swimmer to medal in individual events at the New Zealand Open Championships. His best performance was in the 200m breaststroke when he won a silver medal in 2min 20.15sec. He also won bronze medals in the 400m individual medley (4min 32.97sec) and 200m individual medley (2min 07.82sec).

2010 National Age Group Championships
The best Neptune swimmer at the championships was Katie Kenneally who won gold medals in the 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley. Katie also won silver medals in 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke and 400m individual medley.
The Neptune women's 16 years and over team of Kate Godfrey, Katie Kenneally, Francis Newbold and Lil Clearwater won a silver medal in the 4 x 50m medley relay.
In the 4 x 50m freestyle relay, the Neptune team of Katie Kenneally, Glendene Rout, Kate Godfrey and LiL Clearwater won the bronze medal.
Other Neptune swimmers to win age-group medals were Rebecca Thom (silver in 200m breaststroke), Emily Poon (silver in 800m freestyle) and Glendene Rout (bronze in 50m freestyle).
2010 Division II Competition
The top performer for Neptune in the National Division II Championships at Wellington was Phillip Baxter with a gold medal in the 200m in the 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 200m butterfly.
Sam Armstrong won a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle.
2010 NZ Junior Championships
Congratulations to the following Neptune swimmers who competed at the NZ Junior Championships on 20-21 of February:
Devon Familiton, Grace Perry, Ronald Poon, Aleisha Ruske, Nicole Ruske, Saskia Turner and Han Zhang. The swimmers represented Neptune well achieving personal best times and some regional and national placings.
A special congratulations goes out to Aleisha Ruske who finished in the top 8 nationally for all six of her events including a National Silver Medal in the 100Fly in a personal best time of 1:11.28.
Auckland Age Group Championships (3-5 Dec 2009)
Neptune swimmers performed very well amongst the stiff competition at the Auckland Age Group Championships. The club was represented by 13 swimmers (Nick Tyrrell, Matthew Glassford, Katie Kenneally, Lil Clearwater, Emily Poon, Kate Godfrey, Kurt Crosland, Rebecca Thom, Adrienne Tamilau, Cody Latta, Benjamin Grey and Cameron McMahon) who earned a total of 11 Gold, 21 Silver and 9 Bronze medals. There were also 6 new Otago Long Course records set by members of the squad. Neptune was the 5th ranked club in the meet and was the 1st South Island club.

Kiwi Challenge Results
The Kiwi Challenge meet was very successful for Neptune swimmers who earned many medals and/or gained personal best times. The meet provided good racing opportunities for our younger swimmers as well as those with more experience. 2009 New Zealand Spring Competition
Neptune swimmers performed exceptionally well at the Swimming New Zealand Spring Competition held in Christchurch 26-20 September 2009. The squad of only 14 swimmers (Lil Clearwater, Kurt Crosland, Tegan Duncan, Matthew Glassford, Kate Godfrey, Katie Kenneally, Cody Latta, Cameron McMahon, Frances Newbold, Emily Poon, Adrienne Tameilau, Rebecca Thom, Nick Tyrrell and Emma Whitmore) contested 43 finals and set 25 new Otago Short Course records. Neptune was the 5th ranked club in the competition (1st in the South Island).
Katie Kenneally had an outstanding meet, winning 3 gold medals and one bronze in the Open Age Group. She set a New Zealand Open Female Short Course record in the 200 Breaststroke in a time of 2:27.19. Katie joins the ranks of former Olympians Liz van Welie and Danyon Loader as the only Otago swimmers to hold current New Zealand Open Records. Furthermore, Katie set the New Zealand 18 Year-Old Age Group Records in both the 50 Breaststroke and the 200 Breaststroke.

2009 South Island Championships
Neptune was the 2nd overall club at the South Island champs with 19 Gold, 13 Silver and 13 Bronze medals. Furthermore, our swimmers set 13 new Otago records in the 3 day event!
The Neptune Team consisted of Sam Armstrong, Jessica Bungard, Lil Clearwater, Kurt Crosland, Tegan Duncan, Matthew Glassford, Kate Godfrey, Katie Kenneally, Cody Latta, Cameron McMahon, Robert Murray, Frances Newbold, Emily Poon, Ronald Poon, Adrienne Tamilau, Nick Tyrrell and Emma Whitmore.
Record Breaking Highlights:
Kate Godfrey broke the 14-15 age group and open female Otago Records for 50 backstroke twice. First, she broke the 50 backstroke as the lead-off leg in the Otago 14-15 Women’s 200 Medley Relay in a time of 30.63. In the afternoon, she broke the record again in the 50 metre backstroke final in a time of 30.24 and earned South Island silver medal for this swim.
Kate was part of the gold medal and South Island record setting (time 2.03.08) Girls 14-15 200 Medley relay team consisting of Kate Godfrey (backstroke), Rebecca Thom (breaststroke), Emily Poon (butterfly), Lil Clearwater (freestyle) .
Kate also set the Otago 100 Backstroke record in both the open female and 14-15 age group in a time of 1.03.10. Kate earned a South Island gold medal for this event.
In the last day of competition, Kate also set the 14-15 age group and open women for the 200 backstroke in a time of 2.16.43 and earned a silver medal for this event.
Kurt Crosland broke his own Otago Record for the Open Men’s 50 backstroke in a time of 26.16 and earned a South Island Gold Medal for this swim. Kurt also broke his own Otago Record in the 100 Backstroke in a time of 55.57 when he swum the lead off leg for the Otago Open 400 Medley Relay Team which earned a South Island gold medal. This team consisted of Kurt (backstroke), Matthew Glassford (breaststroke), Shane Patience (butterfly) and Nick Tyrrell (freestyle). Kurt had earned the South Island gold medal for the 16 & Over Men for the 100 backstroke earlier in the evening.
The Otago Open Women’s 400 Medley Relay team also earned a South Island gold medal and set a South Island Record in a time of 4.19.34. The team consisted of Kate Godfrey (backstroke), Katie Kenneally (breaststroke), Frances Newbold (butterfly) and Lil Clearwater (freestyle).
Katie Kenneally set the 200 Open Female Otago Breaststroke record in a time of 2.32.42 and earned a South Island Silver medal for this swim in the 16 & O Women’s age group.
Lil Clearwater equalled the Otago Record for girl’s 14-15 age group in the 100 Freestyle in a time of 59.48 and earned a South Island Gold medal for this event.
Neptune Prize Giving and AGM - 2009 Trophy and Award Winners
Well done to all the swimmers who participated in our recent club champs. The following trophies and awards were presented at the 2009 Neptune Prize Giving and AGM held on 20 July at Moana Pool. In addition to the trophies awarded to the top swimmers in each age group there were special awards for those who have performed well throughout the year and have given service to the Neptune Swimming Club. At the AGM the committee also recognised the outstanding leadership that Ruth van Welie has given the club during her 5-year term as Neptune President. Ruth's vision and dedication to the club has left the club in a strong position and both the swimmers and parents of the club owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude. 2009 New Zealand Open Championships - Christchurch
Neptune continues on with its fine performances at national meets with the small team of only 7 swimmers (Lil Clearnwater, Matthew Glassford, Katie Kenneally, Frances Newbold, Emily Poon, Rebecca Thom and Nick Tyrrell) placing 4th in the national club competion.
New Zealand and Otago Record Breaking Swims
Matthew Glassford broke the New Zealand aged-18 200m breaststroke record twice in the meet. He set the record in the prelims with a time of 2min 18.35 sec to win his heat and then swam another record time of 2min 17.10sec to win the open men's silver medal. He also set the Otago senior men's record when he finished fourth in the men's 100m breaststroke in 1min 05.10sec.
Lil Clearwater broke an Otago girls-aged-15 record when she swam 32.13sec in the women's 50m backstroke heats.

2009 Division II Championships - Wellington
Five Neptune swimmers recently competed at Division II National Swim meet in Rotorua. There were 3500 entries, 248 relay teams from 493 swimmers competing in this competition. All swimmers had excellent qualifying times heading into the meet and achieved personal best's (PB's) in all their races. Sam Armstrong, Olivia Dodds, Shaun Glassford and Robert Murray represented Otago in either the 200m Freestyle and/or the 200m medley relays teams.

2009 National Age Group Championships
Neptune was the 6th Placed Club and 1st South Island Club out of the 75 teams competing at the National Age Group Champions in Wellington, 3-7 of March. There were 656 swimmers at the competition and all Neptune swimmers who competed were finalists with many taking medals as well as setting two new Otago Records!

- Katie Kenneally set the Otago Open Female Long Course record for the 200 Breaststroke in a time of 2.33.64. She also won 5 medals in the Girls 17-18 Age Group: 200 Breast Gold, 100 Breast Gold, 400 IM Gold, 200 IM Gold and 400 Free Silver.
- Cameron McMahon set the Otago Record for Male Age 12-13 Long Course 50 Freestyle in a time of 26.86. He also won 4 medals in the Boys 13 Year Old Age Group: 400 Free Gold, 50 Free Gold, 200 Free Silver, 100 Free Silver.
- Matthew Glassford– Age 17-18 Boys, 200 Breast Gold, 400 IM Silver, 100 Breast Silver
